Cops: Mom waited to get child medical care, now faces murder charge

A mother faces a second-degree murder charge after she allegedly waited to get her injured 2-year-old son medical care, subsequently leading to the child’s death, Floyd County police said.

Sydney Dean knew her child was injured and waited several hours until the child was unresponsive to seek medical care, Floyd County police Sgt. Ojilvia Lom said. The boy died from the injuries.

Dean’s boyfriend, Hassan Shareef Rashad, 38, faces felony murder charges in the child’s death, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Rashad allegedly beat the boy in front of a 5-year-old.

The official cause of death has not been established, but police said the child died from multiple internal injuries.

Rashad also is charged with aggravated assault, aggravated battery and two felony counts of cruelty to children.

Dean, 28, was also charged with second-degree cruelty to children.
