Matthew Moore, 48, of St. Clair County, Ala., is former officer for the Alabama Department of Corrections, Sandy Springs police said Tuesday in a statement.

DNA evidence led police to arrest a former officer accused in “a series of sexual assaults” in Sandy Springs and other places.

Matthew Moore, 48, of St. Clair County, Ala., is a former officer for the Alabama Department of Corrections, Sandy Springs police said Tuesday in a statement.

“We received a hit on DNA evidence from a previous sexual assault case,” Sgt. Sam Worsham said. “Our detectives then compared the cases and developed a suspect.”

Moore was arrested Friday in St. Clair County, Ala., and later extradited to Fulton County, where he faces charges of aggravated sodomy, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, aggravated assault with intent to rape, false imprisonment. Additionally, warrants charge him with two counts of aggravated assault.

Sandy Springs police are waiting on additional DNA evidence from the GBI, Worsham said.

“This investigation has been both exhaustive and intensive as we have reviewed cases going back over 10 years,” Worsham said. “We believe there may be other victims who have yet to come forward.”

Moore is being held in the Fulton jail without bond.

“This is an ongoing investigation and we are asking for other potential victims to come forward at this time,” Worsham said.

Anyone with information about Moore is asked to contact Detective Will Johnson at 770-551-3314.
