Cops: Woman shot in school parking lot gave ‘conflicting stories’

A woman was shot outside Beaverbrook Elementary School in Spalding County on Monday afternoon.

A woman was shot outside Beaverbrook Elementary School in Spalding County on Monday afternoon.

A woman was shot in the parking lot of an elementary school where she was attending an awards ceremony, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Spalding County sheriff’s deputies responded to Spalding Regional Hospital, where the woman told authorities she was shot at Beaverbrook Elementary School.

“All indications are that this incident was not related to the school nor were any students or staff targeted,” sheriff’s Capt. Dwayne Jones said in a statement.

The woman told police she was in the car with two other people when she was shot once in the back and then taken to the hospital, Channel 2 reported.

She was later flown to Atlanta Medical Center and described as alert. No condition was given.

It has not been determined what led to the shooting, but police told Channel 2 the woman gave conflicting stories, including that the gunfire was accidental.

Investigators are speaking with school staff and processing the crime scene where the shooting occurred, Jones said.

“Beaverbrook Elementary School administrators are cooperating with law enforcement as they continue their investigation on campus,” district spokeswoman Kimberly Willis Green said in a statement. “The safety and security of students, staff and parents remains our top priority and we are grateful for the Sheriff’s Department’s immediate response to this matter.”

The shooting comes just days after gunfire near a Clayton County High School left one woman dead and another injured.

About 8 p.m. Friday, a woman was killed and a second was shot in a parking lot across the street from Mt. Zion High School, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported.

The lot at the high school was being used as overflow parking for the Perry Career Academy graduation at the Clayton County Performing Arts Center, which is across the street on Mount Zion Parkway.

The ceremony had recently ended when the women were shot, but the incident was not related to the graduation or the high school, according to the school district.

Two people were arrested but their names and charges have not been released.
