Two parents who allegedly shoplifted at North Point Mall in Alpharetta almost let their children go into state custody when police got involved, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Police questioned Carlos Lozano after Macy’s officials observed him and his wife, Flor Poveda, in the store, Channel 2 reported.

"We were originally watching a woman and the woman would select the merchandise and she went in the fitting room with it,” store officials said in the call to police. "She went to the kids department and started selecting kids merchandise and (Lozano) went to the active wear, men’s wear, and started selecting active merchandise and putting it in the stroller. He had two little children with him."

Police said Poveda then left the store — and left the children behind.

But police said that if she didn’t claim the children and Lozano went to jail, the kids would go into the custody of the state Division of Family and Children Services.

"That was shocking to see this guy willing to let his kids go into DFCS custody simply to avoid prosecution,” Alpharetta police spokesman Howard Miller said.

Lozano is now facing felony shoplifting charges, police said.

Poveda returned to get the children, but police did not arrest her since they had no one to get the children. She also is facing shoplifting charges, Channel 2 reported.
