UGA police: Student fights off attempted abduction in Athens

The student said she was waling in downtown Athens when someone grabbed her and tried to pull her into a car.

A woman in Athens allegedly fought off an attempted abduction Friday morning, according to a safety statement sent to students from the University of Georgia Police Department.

The woman is a UGA student, Channel 2 Action News confirmed.

The attempted abduction occurred near an Athens parking lot at the corner of Broad Street and Oconee Street about 1:30 a.m., police said.

An acquaintance of the victim told UGA police that the woman was walking toward her vehicle when someone grabbed her by the waist from behind. The victim reported seeing a dark-colored car with an open door and a driver nearby.

According to police, the victim said she resisted and the person let go of her and ran to a vehicle. The victim told UGA police she was scratched but was able to escape.
