2 dead, 10-month-old seriously injured in Middle Georgia head-on crash

A head-on crash in Middle Georgia killed two people and seriously injured a 10-month-old boy Thursday morning, authorities confirmed.

The wreck happened on Ga. 83 in Monroe County when a 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche collided with a 2006 Nissan Altima between Jeffrey Way and Abernathy Road, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Lawson Bittick said.

Carole Foster, 24, of Forsyth, was trapped in the Altima and died at the scene, Bittick confirmed.

The 10-month-old traveling with her was flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston after first being taken to Monroe County Hospital, Bittick said.

The driver of the Avalanche, Howard Zach, 50, of Forsyth, was also killed, Bittick said.

Bittick said Zach was traveling south and Foster was heading north. Foster allegedly crossed the center line approaching the crest of a hill, according to witness statements.

The road was closed for more than two hours, Bittick said.

An investigation is ongoing.
