The yurt concept is over 2,400 years old, but the round-shaped, tent abodes have now become a popular "glamping" trend across the country.

At Stone Mountain Park's popular campground, yurts have caught on as an option for first time campers, families with children or park visitors who are just looking for a different adventure.

The park began with three lakeside yurts, then added three more to meet camper demand. The park accepts reservations at 800-385-9807. If glamping in one of these yurts sounds like fun, you better call soon and have some backup dates in mind. The yurts are very popular.

“For first time campers, yurts are a very un-intimidating way to enjoy the outdoors with many of the comforts of home close at hand,” said Jeanine Jones, spokesperson for Stone Mountain Park in a press release. “Families like the fact that they can more easily manage small children while exploring nature.”

Made of wood and insulated canvas, Stone Mountain Park’s smoke-free yurts are located on a scenic lakeside and feature large windows, skylights, ceiling fans and lockable doors. Each unit offers dedicated parking, a potable water spigot and charcoal grill. Inside, friends and family can relax on comfortable log-style furniture or a private deck with seating overlooking the lake. Heating and air conditioning, lighting and electricity make this a comfortable option for even the most wary campers.

A queen size bed, twin bunk bed and double futon sleep up to five, and campers need only bring their bed linens or sleeping bags for a good night’s rest. Convenience centers are located just steps away with restrooms, showers and laundry facilities.

Yurts are available for a minimum two night reservation for $119 a night or $159 a night on holidays. Dedicated shuttles also take campers to and from the nightly lasershow during the summer. With the addition of the new Sweetwater Yurts, Georgia State Parks now has a total of 39 yurt accommodations available. Additional parks that have yurts include: High Falls State Park ; Red Top Mountain State Park and Cloudland Canyon State Park -- six locations in all.
