Plaza Theatre will show “Maynard,” beginning Friday

“Maynard” is getting its first theatrical run and it’s happening in Atlanta.

The Plaza Theatre, 1049 Ponce de Leon Ave., will screen “Maynard”, beginning  Friday.

The documentary details the life of  Maynard H. Jackson, Atlanta’s first black mayor, and has received praise at a number of film festivals, including the Atlanta Film Festival.

The documentary was directed by award-winning filmmaker Sam Pollard,  whose work includes “Slavery By Another Name,” “Eyes on the Prize”  and “25th Hour.”

Maynard Jackson III and Sam Pollard are working on a film about Jackson’s father.

Maynard Jackson III and  his wife, Wendy Eley Jackson, are among the executive producers of  the  90-minute documentary. The elder Jackson died in 2003.

Tickets at the box office are $12 and show times will vary. The Plaza representatives say they may extend the showing if there is enough demand.
