3 Fun Things: Nov. 3-5

SANDY SPRINGS

Elegant Elf Marketplace

Santa’s elves have been working hard all year and so too have the 85 select local and regional vendors you’ll find at this year’s Elegant Elf Marketplace. Held over two days, the super-sized sale invites attendees to peruse jewelry, handcrafted fashions, handbags, toys and an array of other crafts. In between bouts of buying, fuel up at the Polar Express Cafe or get more gift ideas from the fashion show featuring items on sale. Proceeds support the local Sandy Springs community; since the marketplace began, more than $450,000 has gone back to 25 nonprofit groups in the area.

9 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 4; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 5. $5. Lake Forest Elementary School, 5920 Sandy Springs Circle, Sandy Springs. 404-933-7806, sandyspringssociety.org.

The event, one of the largest juried arts and craft shows in the Southeast, features more than 240 vendors showcasing their unique wares. Enter the raffle to win items donated by show artists and grab a sandwich or slice of poppy seed cake at the Cooked Goose Cafe. Homemade treats will also be on display as part of the bake sale booth. Avoid the parking hassles and take the shuttle service, located at the Ashford Green office complex.

KENNESAW

Taste of Kennesaw

The talk of the town often centers around where the best food can be found. What better way to decide than to taste it all? Head to downtown Kennesaw to check out the annual taste of Kennesaw (and the Cobb County area), featuring more than 30 local restaurants, including Williamson Bros BBQ, California Dreaming and Bruster’s Ice Cream. Kick back to the sounds of live music from the main entertainment stage or get a more acoustic vibe from the stage at the Carrabba’s beer garden. If you’ve got little ones, be sure to swing by the Kids Zone with its 33-foot Shark Slide, 24-foot rock wall and a roller coaster obstacle course.

11 a.m.-8 p.m. Nov. 4. Free; food samples are $1-$4 per dish. Downtown Kennesaw, 2829 Cherokee St., Kennesaw. 770-423- 1330, kennesaw.com.

The garage door gapes open on Mart Clamp’s metal prefab shop, located on a gravel driveway the same shade of gray as the overcast sky. Crammed inside are assorted hammers, knives and rollers of all sizes, an air compressor, wood fragments and chunks of granite ranging in size from a TV tray to a small child. The light from a floor lamp slices...

In ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,’ the story’s bite is shallow

The best thing “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” has going for it is director J.A. Bayona, who takes a mediocre script by Derek Connolly and Colin Trevorrow and directs the living daylights out of it. This installment may have merely shallow ideas, but it’s easy to be distracted in the moment by the verve and style “The Orphanage&rdquo...

To stop summer brain drain, set fun learning goals

Q: What is your perspective on having kids do “homework” over the summer? My two kids (finishing fourth and second grades) both love to read and are above grade-level readers, so I am not worried about that element. But I wonder whether, and how much, time should be spent reviewing math, etc., over break. I have used the summer workbooks...

Caterpillars very picky about what they eat

During the weekly Nature Ramble at the State Botanical Garden in Athens last week, we paused to examine a sprawling purple passion-flower vine on a fence. Now blooming across Georgia, the passion-flower, or may-pop, is one of the state‘s most beautiful, eye-catching wildflowers. We were paying more attention, though, to the vine’s bright...
