From hometown raucous rockers Mastodon to Lady Gaga’s globe-spanning “Joanne” tour, the fall music calendar offers an eclectic lineup of live productions. Here are a few to consider.
One MusicFest. The eighth installment of the One MusicFest will spotlight a lineup including Jill Scott, Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def), Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, Sean Paul, Jidenna, Kaytranada, Too Short, Tank and the Bangas. This is expected to be the final performance for Yasiin Bey, although in 2016 he announced he was playing his final shows last December and January in New York and Washington D.C., but apparently had a change of heart. The B-52s. If you've ever wondered what "Rock Lobster" might sound like with a touch of viola, this is your opportunity to find out. The quirky popsters – Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, Cindy Wilson and Keith Strickland – will share the stage with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for a pair of shows celebrating their 40th anniversary. 8 p.m. Sept. 14-15. Mastodon. In April, the metal band's drummer Brann Dailor talked with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution about their latest album, "Emperor of Sand," which features more melodic rock than earlier releases. The Fox show represents a homecoming for the Atlanta band, which usually plays the festival circuit or smaller venues such as the Tabernacle. Gorillaz. The last time Gorillaz ventured to North America in 2010, Atlanta was not part of the itinerary. But come October, fans of the cartoon band masterminded by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett will be able to experience Gorillaz live on their "Humanz Tour," named after their new album released in April (those who purchase a concert ticket will receive a choice of a physical or digital copy of the release). The live show will feature Albarn and musicians Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, Russel Hobbs and 2D. With D.R.A.M. 8 p.m. Oct. 11. Ringo Starr and His Allstar Band. The "peace and love"-spouting Beatle returns to Atlanta for the first time in five years. His musical gang since 2012 — Todd Rundgren, Gregg Rolie, Steve Lukather, Richard Page, Warren Ham and Gregg Bissonette – will join him for the run, which kicks off in October with eight shows at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. "The dream is still unfolding," Starr said when the tour was announced. "I love to play, and I love to play with this band. I can't say that enough, and we're on the road again." 8 p.m. Nov. 11. Lady Gaga. By the time the "Joanne World Tour" (named for her current album) winds its way to Atlanta, Lady Gaga will have stampeded through several U.S. stadiums, dozens of arenas and twirled across Europe – so the show should be in perfect form. The Super Bowl queen is preaching love and tolerance at her concerts, which have featured a career-spanning romp through hits "Just Dance," "Poker Face" and "Bad Romance," as well as "Joanne"-era tunes "Perfect Illusion" and "John Wayne." 7:30 p.m. Nov. 28.
