Here are three more notable brewpubs that are a bit under the radar.
Hop Alley, Alpharetta
25 S. Main St., Alpharetta. 770-696-2097, hopalleybrew.com.
Boasting perhaps metro Atlanta’s most unusual brewpub layout, Hop Alley lives up to its name, situated in a long, narrow space that stretches from the Main Street Alpharetta front entrance to a small patio that looks out on the alley in back. The brewhouse and tanks are crammed behind the long bar, allowing guests the opportunity to take in the sights of freshly made beer.
There are some unusual items on the menu, such as bacon in a jar (literally) and battered white cheddar curds served with house-made beer cheese, along with more familiar pub grub favorites like burgers and tacos. Signature beers include The Governator, an IPA, and Frankenstrong, a Belgian golden ale.
Good Word, Duluth
3085 Main Street Suite 520, Duluth. 404-973-2077, www.goodwordbrewing.com.
Brought to you by the beer pionerrs who decided to serve beer with flavor way back in 1997 at Decatur’s Brick Store Pub, Good Word is in the Parsons Alley development in downtown Duluth. Their latest offering opened in late 2017 and it differs from the Brick Store in one really big way: they brew their own beer.
Among the current recipes in the historic old building: Donna-Maria is a dry, hoppy Belgian-style saison. Rocksteady is a light British-style mild ale. Never Sleep is a tropical-style American IPA. And Canadian-American is an easy-drinking blonde ale.
Torched Hop Brewing Co., Midtown Atlanta
249 Ponce de Leon Ave. N.E., Atlanta. 404-835-2040, torchedhopbrewing.com.
Torched Hop was opened in 2016 in the former Old Spaghetti Factory space near Mary Mac’s on Ponce de Leon Avenue. Billed as “a community gathering place for people to enjoy great conversation over bold flavored beers,” the ambitious, multilevel build-out features a brewhouse visible from the dining room, a separate bar area and a game room. Current beers include Holy Citramony, an IPA, and Just Another Dream, a wheat beer with fruit juices.
