Pizza takes a spin around the world

Pizza isn’t just Italian now. Some of the most interesting pies across the city blend global ingredients and methods for flavor profiles that blur the lines between cuisines.

Pizza gets a Middle Eastern makeover at Alloralocated in the Twelve Hotel Midtown (361 17th St. NW, Atlanta. 404-961-7370, alloraatl.com), where you can get a pie with tikka masala sauce, chicken shwarma, mozzarella, cilantro, labneh (a tangy yogurt cheese) and pickled red onions.

At Torched Hop Brewing Co. (249 Ponce de Leon Ave. NE, Atlanta. 404-835-2040, torchedhopbrewing.com), the carnitas pizza uses heavy Mexican spices and other traditional ingredients, along with a blend of adobo roast pork, avocado, salsa verde, sweet onion and feta.

Hopstix in Chamblee (3404 Pierce Drive, Chamblee. 678-888-2306, hopstix.comhas an expansive menu with a multitude of fusion dishes (sushi corndog, anyone?). Its version of pizza boasts shrimp cooked in a sake-garlic sauce, plus hoisin sauce, mozzarella, parmesan and wonton skin.

In Duluth, Joy Pizza N Joy Chicken (10820 Abbotts Bridge Road, Duluth. 770-813-8882, joypizzanjoychicken.com) cooks several Asian-style pizzas, including a Korean steak pie topped with onion, green pepper and mushroom, and a sweet potato pizza with corn, ham, sweet potato, sausage and pineapple.

Also in Duluth, Rice n Pie (3980 Peachtree Industrial Blvd., Duluth. 770-302-0320, ricenpie.com) crafts a multitude of fusion pizzas. They have a few Indian-inspired creations — including the Butter Paneer and 65 Pizza — as well as a Jamaican-themed jerk chicken pizza that’s delightfully spicy, a Korean barbecue chicken pizza, and a Thai pizza with a vibrant Thai green sauce and a hint of cilantro.

Over in Alpharetta, Vinny’s on Windward (5355 Windward Parkway, Alpharetta. 770-772-4644, sedgwickrestaurantgroup.com/vinnys) gives pizza a Greek twist with a lamb sausage creation, topped with goat cheese and broccolini.

And further OTP, Fire Stone Wood Fired Pizza & Grill (120 Chambers St., Woodstock. 770-926- 6778, firestonerestaurants.com) has a spicy, Mexican-infused pizza, the Mayan, that gets extra flavor from poblano salsa, and features smoked shredded beef, mozzarella, cheddar and corn pico.

Lastly, if you’re craving pizza for dessert, stop by Inman Park’s Fritti (309 N. Highland Ave. NE, Atlanta. 404-880-9559, frittiatl.com), where they offer a Nutella pizza that’s slathered in the rich, velvety chocolate-hazelnut spread, topped with coarsely chopped hazelnuts. It’s an indulgent serving of heavenly chocolate goodness in every slice.

Recipes for sweet treats from a Dutch childhood
Recipes for sweet treats from a Dutch childhood

Boterkoek is neither a cookie, nor a cake nor a pie. The Dutch treat is a dense, sweet pastry made from a simple mix of butter, sugar and flour, kneaded into a firm dough, pressed into a baking pan and cooked to a buttery golden delight. “Boter” means butter and that sums it up pretty well. A boterkoek recipe published in the November/December...
