Kim Kardashian made herself a target through social media, Paris police say

Paris police believe that reality TV star Kim Kardashian made herself a target through a combination of her celebrity and her heavy social media presence before armed thieves made off with an estimated $10 million worth of jewelry Sunday, according to CNN.

"It was really the celebrity who was targeted, with possessions that had been seen and noticed via social media, and it was these goods that the attackers targeted," Johanna Primevert, chief spokeswoman for the Paris police department, told the news network.

Fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld earlier Tuesday shared similar criticisms of Kardashian, telling The Associated Press that she is too naïve and flashy with her wealth.

The head designer and creative director of Chanel told the wire service that Kardashian is "too public" instead of cautious, as he said she should be in this day and age.

"You cannot display your wealth, then be surprised that some people want to share it," he told the wire service. "I don't understand why (Kardashian) was in a hotel with no security and things like this. If you are that famous and you put all your jewelry on the net, you go to hotels where nobody can come near to the room."

Among the jewelry stolen in the heist was a massive 20-carat diamond ring from Lorraine Schwartz worth an estimated $4.9 million, E! News reported.

The ring was prominently featured in one of Kardashian's posts to Instagram last week, three days before the robbery.

French police are searching for five people suspected of carrying out the robbery. It was not immediately clear whether Kardashian's assailants were caught on surveillance footage.

Authorities said the five robbers wore fake police emblems on their jackets in order to pose as law enforcement and forced their way into her apartment in Paris. She and some of her famous relatives were visiting the city for Paris Fashion Week.

According to authorities, the robbers held up Kardashian at gunpoint before locking her in a bathroom and fleeing on bicycles with a jewelry box and the $4.9 million ring.

Prosecutors declined to say whether investigators were looking at the robbery as an inside job, as was reported by gossip site TMZ.

According to The Associated Press, Kardashian's stylist was in the apartment and called police when the robbery took place but her bodyguard was missing.

She returned to the United States on Monday.
