Here’s how Delta got a shot of an A350 jet flying by a supermoon

With three aircraft and a lot of planning, Delta Air Lines captured a shot of its new flagship jet, the Airbus A350-900, flying past the super blue blood moon.

Delta pilots Laura Lucas-Edwards and Shane Capaldi flew the A350, nicknamed the ‘Starship,’ taking off from the Mojave Desert for the supermoon fly-by. Delta captain Mike “Popeye” Doyle also played a key role in the operation.

Atlanta-based Delta said getting the air-to-air video in late January took months of planning with Pouya Dianat of Atlanta production company BEAM, culminating in four flights of the A350 with a camera-carrying L-39 jet or helicopter at its wingtips.

"We were creating the world's toughest billiard shot,” according to Dianat.
