The metro Atlanta area’s surge in warehousing ticked up yet another notch Tuesday with an announcement that British fashion merchant ASOS plans to open an e-commerce “fulfillment center” south of Atlanta where it says it will eventually employ 1,600.

ASOS joins the ranks of Amazon, Tory BurchHome Chef and many other brands in establishing new distribution centers in the metro area. Many of the newest centers are designated for shipping online orders amid the rise in online retail.

Gov. Nathan Deal’s office issued a news release stating ASOS will spend $40 million on the new center in Union City in south Fulton County. The company, which specializes in apparel for young adults, sells its own branded clothing and apparel by other makers.

The Atlanta region is a hub for the Southeast and trade east of the Mississippi with its rail and freeway network, and the state boasts the bustling ports of Savannah and Brunswick and Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

ASOS Vice President of Logistics Brent Dorfman called the Atlanta area in the release “an ideal location for us.”

“It is a vibrant and growing international city with a diverse culture,” he said. “We will use the region’s transportation network and deep pool of talent to deliver ASOS’ best-in-class service to U.S. customers.”
