AAA says travel over Memorial Day weekend will be up nearly 5 percent

AAA said it expects more 41.5 million Americans to travel over Memorial Day weekend, up nearly 5 percent over last year.

Of those, 3.1 million will travel by air, up 6.8 percent, according to the auto club. That includes more than 100,000 in Georgia who plan to fly over the holiday weekend. Memorial Day marks the start of the busy summer travel season.

The vast majority of travelers over Memorial Day will be taking road trips, including more than 1.1 million from Georgia. Orlando is the top Memorial Day travel destination.

In Atlanta, the busiest day for travel is expected to be Thursday May 24, and the worst time for travel will be 3:30-5:30 p.m when trips will take 1.6 times as long.
