MTV's TV series "Scream" last aired an original episode almost two years ago. A third season starring former "Teen Wolf" star Tyler Posey was produced and shot last year in metro Atlanta.

But it’s now July 2018 and MTV has yet to release the show or even reveal a launch date. So why has there been such a long delay?

A story in Deadline.com today gave us a clue though not necessarily the answer. The Weinstein Co. produces "Scream" and that alone is a complication since dozens of women accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment and assault. This led to his company filing for bankruptcy and selling off its assets, which include the "Scream" franchise.

Netflix, according to the Deadline story, won approval from a U.S. Bankruptcy Court to terminate its output deal with The Weinstein Co. This means it isn’t obligated to stream the third season of “Scream.”

Lantern Entertainment, which had purchased the Weinstein assets for $289 million, is trying to clear the deck of legal issues stemming from The Weinstein Company's bankruptcy.

Netflix had argued that without Harvey and Bob Weinstein at the helm, a “key man” provision enabled them to get out of any deal that involves any new output by the company.

The new "Scream" cast features RJ Cyler (I'm Dying Up Here), Giorgia Whigham (13 Reasons Why), Jessica Sula (Recovery Road), rapper Tyga (aka Michael Ray Stevenson), C.J. Wallace and Giullian Yao Gioiello (Julie's Greenroom).

The first two seasons, which aired in 2015 and 2016, are currently available on Netflix.
