Peabody Award 2017 finalists include FX's 'Atlanta,' Netflix's 'Stranger Things'

The prestigious Peabody Awards at the University of Georgia released its 60 finalists today, including two shows shot in Atlanta that have received a boatload of awards and nominations already: FX's "Atlanta" and Netflix's "Stranger Things."

Other television programs which are finalists include ABC's "American Crime," FX's "Better Things," Beyonce's visual album on HBO "Lemonade," Netflix's "Marvel's Luke Cage," NBC's "This is Us" and HBO's "Veep," which has amazingly never won despite being a perennial Emmy victor.

About half will win take home an actual Peabody. The 60 finalists were culled from 1,200 entrants.

The Peabody Awards are overseen by the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at UGA and the winners selected by an esteemed body of educators, critics and media professionals. The winners will be feted on May 20 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York. The event will be taped for a television special to air on both PBS and FUSION networks on Friday, June 2 at 9 p.m., with Rashida Jones ("Parks and Recreation," "Angie Tribeca") as host.
