Mitch Faulkner has joined the new Classix 102.9, handling its imaging, doing local inserts during the Tom Joyner show and hosting his Saturday night throwbacks show from 7 p.m. to midnight.
Faulkner left Kiss 104.1, where he has worked on and off the past three decades. He has been employed on Atlanta radio at different stations since 1980. This is a reunion of sorts since he was part of Tom Joyner's syndication operation in Dallas from 2004 to 2007.
He also does voice-over imaging for 47 stations nationwide.
Faulkner is providing local news, traffic and weather, as well as local contests information, during the Tom Joyner morning show, which Kiss dropped last month after more than 20 years. Joyner started on Classix on Tuesday. Radio One, which owns both the Joyner show and 102.9, dropped its classic hip-hop station Boom 102.9 to accommodate Joyner.
D.L. Hughley's syndicated afternoon show started two weeks ago on Classix.
Faulkner said he did imaging for Kiss from 1994 to 2005 so this is the first time Atlantans will hear his voice every 15 minutes, seven days a week, in 12 years.
Classix is on a limited signal but it covers what Faulkner dubs high-density black areas on the south side of town and provides R&B music from the 1970s and 1980s dropped recently by Kiss and Old School 87.7 (now Mix 87.7).
