Dirty Dancing on ABC

This was posted on Saturday, May 20, 2017 by Rodney Ho/rho@ajc.com on his AJC Radio & TV Talk blog

Three decades ago, the surprise hit "Dirty Dancing" turned Patrick Swayze into a star. ABC is "rebooting" the classic movie with new actors, the same scenario and the actors breaking out into song on Wednesday night.

If you want the "time of your life," however, stick with the original film. The reviews have been harsh. Variety: "a sappy, passionless, schlocky remake of the original, without even the iota of imagination necessary to expand upon the 1987 film." TVLine: "The whole endeavor feels like the Disney ride version of Dirty Dancing: cleaner, prettier and way frothier than the already frothy real thing." TV Guide: "This isn't so much dirty as drippy."

CBS revisits the life of Princess Diana, who died tragically in 1997. "Her name was Diana and the world fell in love with her," "CBS This Morning" co-host Gayle King said in "Princess Diana: Her Life | Her Death | The Truth" airing Monday at 8 p..m. "But her fairy tale life also had a heartache – it did not have a happily ever after ending."

And there are a host of shows that are ending their seasons with the broadcast season officially ending Wednesday: "The Voice" (NBC, Monday), "Jane the Virgin" (CW, Monday), "Dancing With the Stars" (ABC, Tuesday), "Survivor" (CBS, Wednesday), "Empire (Fox, Wednesday), "Law & Order: SVU" (NBC, Wednesday).

ABC's "The Bachelorette" returns Monday with its first African American lead and NBC ("Beat Shazam") and Fox ("Love Connection") introduce game shows Thursday.
