Ludacris will bring some Atlanta pride to the Americans at Guantánamo Bay this weekend.
The rapper/actor is slated to perform on Fourth of July at the U.S. Navy base, which is home to fewer than 6,000 people -- most of them Navy families, troops, Department of Defense contractors and the last 79 war-on-terror detainees.
While Jimmy Buffett performed there in 2002, other acts have been of lesser star wattage: Magic! (you know, the one-hit-in-the-U.S.-wonders behind 2014’s “Rude”) played last year and Jimmy Eat World the year prior. In October, the Plain White T’s performed on the island as well.
Navy chief Monique Hilley told the Miami Herald that the base does receive a special performance each year around the Fourth of July, but "Gitmo hasn't seen a star with as big a name as Ludacris in several years."
This isn’t the first military base performance for Luda. He played Fort Meade in Maryland in 2010 as well as a homecoming show for soldiers at Fort Hood, Texas, in 2004.
Ludacris is currently at work on "Fast 8," the latest in "The Fast and the Furious" franchise, which has filmed in Atlanta and Cuba.
