A T.I. concert in New York turned violent Wednesday night when four people were shot, one fatally, while awaiting the Atlanta rapper’s performance.

According to The New York Times, three men and one woman were shot. One of the men died.

The gunfire erupted inside Irving Plaza (a fan captured some of the shooting and tweeted it) about 10:15 p.m.

On Wednesday night, reports said that T.I.'s DJ was on stage warming up the crowd when the shootings occurred, but New York City Chief of Manhattan Detectives William Aubry said in a press conference Thursday that two people were performing at the time of the shooting. T.I. had not yet performed.

One concert attendee told New York's WPIX that security did not search anyone upon entering the venue, although it is equipped with metal detectors.

Irving Plaza, near Union Square in Manhattan, holds about 1,000 people and was filled to capacity.

Sources told New York's CBS affiliate that the shooting was prompted by an argument backstage.
