Atlanta Concerts this week: V-103 'Pop-Up Live,' Los Lobos

BY MELISSA RUGGIERI/AJC Music Scene

FRIDAY

Loudon Wainwright III

Last summer, the astute songwriter/humorist released the political satire song, “I Had a Dream,” which imagined a Donald Trump presidency and was complemented by a Judd Apatow-produced video. It is very, very likely that the father of Rufus, Martha and Lucy Wainwright will perform it this weekend.

7:30 p.m. March 24-25. $36-$42. Eddie’s Attic, 515-B N. McDonough St., Decatur. 1-877-987-6487, www.ticketfly.com.

SATURDAY

V-103 “Pop Up Live”

The radio station that brought its second Winterfest concert to Philips Arena for the holidays with a starry hip-hop lineup including Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz is staging a “Pop Up Live” concert featuring Rick Ross, Big Boi, T.I., Meek Mill and Plies. Considering that Usher and Wale made surprise guest appearances at Winterfest, it’s a safe guess that this show will have some unexpected names as well.

8 p.m. March 25. $43-$143. Philips Arena, 1 Philips Drive, Atlanta. 1-800-745-3000, www.ticketmaster.com.

Dinosaur Jr.

Fans of the alt-rock veterans thrilled at the news of the band’s 2015 release, “Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not,” since it marked yet more new music from the band that had recorded only three full albums during its initial 1980s run. The original lineup of J. Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph has remained intact for more than a decade since reuniting and they are still proudly shredding it live.

With Easy Action. 8 p.m. March 25. $29-$31. Variety Playhouse, 1099 Euclid Ave. N.E., Atlanta. 1-877-987-6487, www.ticketfly.com.

MONDAY

We the Kings

It’s been 10 years since the quintet from Bradenton, Fla., first broke through with the power pop single, “Check Yes Juliet.” To celebrate their decade anniversary, the band will play that self-titled debut album in its entirety. And you’ll also likely hear their sweet version of “The Story of Tonight,” from the “Hamilton” soundtrack. The guys released the compilation album, “So Far,” last summer.

With Cute Is What We Aim For, Plaid Brixx, Astro Lasso and the Everyday Anthem. 7 p.m. March 27. $25. Hell at the Masquerade, Kenny’s Alley at Underground Atlanta, 75 MLK Jr. Drive S.W., Atlanta. 404-577-8178, www.ticketmaster.com.

THURSDAY

Los Lobos

The new recipients of the BMI Icon Award — presented to songwriters who have had an influence on generations of music makers — released the album “Gates of Gold” in 2015. While casual observers know them best for their 1987 crossover cover of Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba,” the Tex-Mex rockers from East Los Angeles have been churning out reliable Latin roots rock since the mid-‘70s.

7 p.m. March 30. Sold out (wait list available). City Winery, 650 North Ave., Atlanta. 404-946-3791, www.citywinery.com/atlanta.

Now, those retro trees are making a comeback.  Vintage lifestyle expert Bob Richter told Today Home the trees spike in popularity every year around Christmas. They’re small, no-fuss, easy Christmas decorations. “People put them on top of the television, back when the...
Irreversible muscle damage linked to statins

Q: Several weeks ago, you wrote about the side effects of cholesterol-lowering statin medicines. According to the article, these drugs can attack muscle tissue, and the damage may be irreversible. That is what happened to me. I now need to use a cane when I walk, and I worry that someday I might need a wheelchair. I took statins for only a short time...

Where to find snow and fun near Atlanta this holiday season

More than just a song about the ones you used to know, a white Christmas can be magical. Snowflakes create the chance for snowball fights, fireside romance and everything in between. Living in Georgia, though, means a winter wonderland isn't very likely – and you might be stuck in traffic anyway. Luckily, if you've got your two front teeth...
