Fulton jury awards $45 million in medical malpractice case

Negligent care by two obstetricians led to a new mother suffering severe brain damage and a heart attack, a Fulton County jury decided earlier this month in awarding more than $45 million in a malpractice case.

Shannon Trabue had given birth three days earlier at Northside Hospital when she suffered a heart attack while undergoing x-rays, according to Courtroom View Network reports. Hospital staff resuscitated her, but her attorneys said she suffered permanent brain damage after going 10 minutes without oxygen.

Defense attorneys argued that the heart attack was the result of a blood clot and couldn't be foreseen. Attorneys for Trabue argued that Trabue's doctors Rebecca Simonsen and Stanley Angus of Atlanta Women's Specialists had failed to properly treat her blood pressure problems and fluid in her lungs.

According to information posted on the Georgia Composite Medical Board website, neither of the physicians has had previous malpractice settlements over $100,000.
