Before Netflix's hit Orange is the New Black was stolen and held for ransom, an Atlanta health clinic was the victim of hackers known as The Dark Overlord. That attack put more than half a million patients in five Georgia counties at risk of having their personal information stolen, the AJC reported last year.
In that case, the hackers put some batches of stolen data up for sale and threatened to release prescription and medical records of thousands more patients of Peachtree Orthopaedic unless it paid a ransom, various media reported.
According to the online magazine Motherboard, several Peachtree patients fell victims, having phony credit card applications made in their names.
In the Netflix hack, The Dark Overlord obtained copies of season five of Orange is the New Black and released some episodes on illegal file-sharing sites when the ransom wasn't paid.
