The region tournaments opened this week and playoff spots have been secured in the majority of the regions, although the top seeds out of each region won’t be determined until Friday and Saturday for most of the state. In the boys Region 1, Westover and Shaw punched their tickets into the postseason with wins over Northside-Columbus and Hardaway. Carver-Columbus and Americus-Sumter will be fresh off the bye this Thursday as the winners go on to play for the top seed and region crown.

Unbeaten Upson-Lee faces Howard Wednesday night in the semifinals of the Region 2 tournament. The winner will return to the court on Friday for the region championship to face the winner of Wednesday night’s Mary Persons at Perry.

Burke County erupted for a 105-66 win over Cross Creek to open up the Region 3 tournament this past Tuesday to clinch a postseason berth. Now, the upset-minded Bears face Richmond Academy this Thursday, while Baldwin and Thomson stage another intriguing Region 3 semifinal matchup.

Troup and Cedartown will compete for a playoff spot tonight, along with the chance to take on LaGrange in Friday’s Region 5 semifinals. Northwest Whitfield, Ridgeland, Heritage-Catoosa and LaFayette hold Region 6’s four playoff berths and the five-team Region 7 will stage a semifinal double-header between West Hall and Blessed Trinity, and between White County and Marist to sort out Saturday’s final.

St. Pius awaits North Oconee after the Titans defeated Oconee County 57-47 on Tuesday, and Madison County will face Stephens County on Friday, which defeated Jefferson 64-47.

On the girls side, Region 2 is set for a semifinal showdown tonight that will set up Friday’s Finals and Consolation Game. Upson-Lee held Howard to just 21 points in Monday’s 52-21 victory and they will put that defense to the test against top-seeded Spalding tonight. All eight of the regions have solidified their four-team playoff fields. As a result, Region 2’s semifinals are tonight, while Region 3, 4, 5, 6 return to the hardwood on Thursday and Region 7, 8 tipoff their semis this Friday.
