Twiggs County upsets Stratford Academy

Here’s a little of what went down Friday night:

Twiggs wins again

OK, it’s time to really start taking Twiggs County seriously. Really seriously. For the second consecutive week, the Cobras dispatched of one of the top Macon-area private schools. Last week it was First Presbyterian Day, 29-17, this week Twiggs, ranked No. 9 in the public poll, blanked Stratford Academy, ranked No. 6 in the private poll, 21-0, in The Pit in Jeffersonville. It was the first time the Eagles (4-2, 1-1 in Region 7-Division A) had been shut out since 2010, when the program was competing in the Georgia Independent Schools Association. Once again, RB/LB Ja’Mon Height led the charge with 166 yards rushing on 24 carries and a touchdown. The bruising senior is the key to the Cobras’ winning formula – a powerful running game and stingy defense. This is exactly what will be needed in order to matchup against the likes of No. 1 Clinch County, No. 2 Macon County, No. 3 Emanuel County Institute and No. 4 Manchester.

GWA stuns Athens Christian

Quietly, George Walton Academy looks like it is back. After three lean seasons in which the Bulldogs went 13-17, the Bulldogs are 5-1, 4-1 in Region 8, following a 10-7 win over Athens Christian (3-3, 2-3) on Friday. GWA stunned the Eagle’s home crowd when Wesley Long broke a 7-7 tie at the buzzer with a 34-yard field goal. Athens Christian had tied the score with 1:51 left in regulation on a touchdown pass from Cody Lee to Terrell Maddox.

Marion County back on track

The Eagles dropped out of the top 10 two weeks ago after they lost back-to-back games to Class AA Lamar County and No. 4 (Public) Manchester by a combined score of 62-7. But Marion (5-2, 3-1 in Region 4-Division A) appears to have righted the ship after Friday’s 35-7 pasting of Brookstone (3-3, 2-1). Freshman QB Trice McCannon came on in relief of injured starter Quentez Battle and completed 6-of-7 passes while rushing for 55 yards on 13 carries, including touchdown runs of 3 and 10 yards. Travon Matthews had 200 yards rushing on 32 carries, with touchdown runs of 1 and 2 yards.
