Charlemagne Gibbons, the coach who led Morgan County to its first-ever boys basketball state championship this season, has taken a job as an assistant at Florida Atlantic.
‘’It was a hard decision because I love my guys and my school,’’ Gibbons said. “But it’s a great opportunity.’’
Gibbons was approached by Florida Atlantic’s new coach, Michael Curry, a former NBA player from Glenn Hills High in Augusta, shortly after Morgan County’s season, Gibbons told the Morgan County Citizen newspaper.
Morgan County is expected to be a strong contender again in 2015. Point guard Tookie Brown, who averaged 26.7 points, will be a senior. Morgan County also returns forward Jailyn Ingram, who averaged 16.1 points and 7.1 rebounds.
Gibbons, 36, is an Alabama native who came to Morgan County eight in 2006.
Aside helping Morgan County’s boys to the AAA title last season, Gibbons also made school history in 2012 when he led the school’s boys and girls teams to the quarterfinals. He gave up the girls coaching job the next season.
Morgan County has not named a replacement.
