A scary mid-air collision bloodied two players during the Westminster-Greater Atlanta Christian match on Tuesday.
Westminster forward/midfielder Chris Ottley suffered a fractured nasal cavity and a concussion after hitting heads with Greater Atlanta Christian’s Will Hamryka.
Ottley was helped off the field and taken to the hospital. He was released Tuesday night, Westminster coach Scott Snyder said, but likely will miss the playoffs.
Hamryka sustained a mild concussion and a laceration on the back of his head, GAC coach Thom Jacquet said.
“It was scary,” added Jacquet. “It made a horrific sound, like a fastball being hit for a 400-foot home run.”
Greater Atlanta Christian won the match, 5-1, capping the first undefeated season in program history. The Spartans, No. 1 in Class AA, are No. 1 seed out of Region 6.
Playoff brackets were released Wednesday. Here are links to each classification:
--McIntosh, the No. 1 team in the nation, heads into the AAAA playoffs having won 40 consecutive matches. The Chiefs knocked off rival Starr’s Mill, 3-1, on Tuesday and will be the No. 1 seed out of Region 4-AAAAA.
--One of the two host sites for the state soccer championship games has been changed. A scheduling conflict with West Georgia University caused the GHSA to relocate part of the games to Emory University. The games will be held May 16-17 at Emory and Kennesaw State.
