POY Watch: Lawrence back on top after five-TD game on TV

Trevor Lawrence is back on top of the GHSF Daily Player of the Year Watch after throwing five TD passes in a nationally televised victory over Bartram Trail of Florida last week.

New to the POY Watch this week are Jefferson RB/DB Colby Wood, who had a 200-yard rushing game for the seventh time in his career, and QB Jarren Williams, who threw for more than 300 yards for the eighth time.

The POY Watch is designed to be a fun look at some of the best players. Players naturally will drift in and out, and that should not be taken as a critique of their season. It is an honor to appear in the POW Watch even for a single week.

1. QB Trevor Lawrence, Cartersville: Lawrence was 18-of-23 passing for 403 yards and five touchdowns in a 52-45 victory over Bartram Trail of Florida. For the season, the Clemson commit is 30-of-42 for 633 yards and seven touchdowns with one interception. He is the reigning all-class POY. Lawrence needs 1,844 yards and 33 touchdown passes to break the Georgia career records of 13,077 and 159 held by Deshaun Watson.

2. QB Justin Fields, Harrison: Fields was 21-of-30 passing for 230 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in a 33-21 loss to Rome. He rushed for 73 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries despite several sacks. On the season, Fields is 32-of-48 passing for 457 yards and six touchdowns with one interception. He has rushed for 226 yards and three scores on 32 carries. In 2016, he passed for 2,278 yards and rushed for 851 yards. Fields is the consensus No. 1 recruit in the country.

3. DL Adam Anderson, Rome: Anderson had three sacks, 10 tackles overall, and forced a fumble in a season-opening 33-21 victory over Harrison. Anderson had some 30 tackles for losses last season and is the consensus No. 2 OLB prospect nationally. Rome is ranked No. 1 in Class AAAAA.

4. QB Michael Barrett, Lowndes: Barrett rushed for 29 yards and a touchdown on three carries and did not attempt a pass in a 48-0 victory over International School of Broward County (Fla.).  He has rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns and is 8-of-15 passing for 86 yards and two touchdowns in two games. In 2016, Barrett passed for 2,753 yards and rushed for 1,170. Barrett has offers from Georgia Tech, LSU, Michigan and Tennessee, among others. Lowndes is ranked No. 3 in AAAAAAA.

5. DL Brenton Cox, Stockbridge: Cox had one sack, two tackles for losses, three solo tackles and a forced fumble in a season-opening 9-0 victory over Mays, the No. 5 team in Class AAAAAA. It was the first time that Mays had been shut out in 64 games. Cox, the reigning Region 4-AAAAA defensive player of the year, is committed to Ohio State. He's rated the consensus No. 2 strongside DE prospect nationally. Stockbridge is ranked No. 3 in AAAAA.

6. WR Josh Vann, Tucker: Vann had four catches for 70 yards and two touchdowns and returned a punt 70 yards for a touchown in a 54-0 victory over Lakeside of Atlanta. On the season,Vann has 11 catches for 229 yards and five touchdowns. Vann had 63 receptions for 1,286 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. Vann is committed to South Carolina. Tucker is ranked No. 1 in Class AAAAAA.

7. Bailey Fisher, Rabun County: Fisher was 9-of-11 passing for 172 yards and two touchdowns in a 62-21 season-opening victory over Mount Pisgah Christian. Fisher also rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns. He participated in only 27 plays. Fisher passed for 2,671 yards and rushed for 1,001 last season. Fisher has Division II offers.

8. Colby Wood, Jefferson: Wood rushed for 243 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries in a 50-13 victory over Riverwood. He also intercepted a pass. Wood has rushed for 328 yards in Jefferson's 2-0 start and for 4,575 yards with 66 touchdowns in his career. Jefferson is ranked No. 5 in Class AAAA.

9. Jarren Williams, Central Gwinnett: Williams was 21-of-32 passing for 344 yards and three touchdowns in a 36-33 victory over Dacula. On the season, Williams is 41-of-67 for 645 yards and six touchdowns with one interception. He has 114 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Williams is committed to Kentucky. Central Gwinnett is 2-0 for the first time since 2012.

10. QB Harrison Bailey, Marietta: Bailey's team did not play last week. Bailey was 22-of-31 passing for 332 yards and five touchdowns in a 52-0 victory over Wheeler in the opener. Bailey broke Lawrence's freshman state record for passing yards (2,812) in just 10 games last season. Bailey is a potential five-star recruit in the class of 2020.
