A look back at Round 1 and a look ahead to Round 2

BOYS

-- Here is the private bracket and the public bracket for Round 2.

-- Region 6 went from 10 teams in the playoffs to six after Round 1. Seven of the teams competed in Round 1 with Darlington, Trion and Walker claiming wins while Fellowship Christian, King’s Ridge, Mt. Pisgah and Whitefield Academy were eliminated. All four losing teams fell to higher seeds.

-- Drew Charter of Atlanta and Fulton Leadership Academy of South Fulton, both in the state tournament for the first time, won their Round 1 games. No. 19 Drew defeated No. 14 Clinch County, 66-60, while No. 20 FLA beat No. 13 Treutlen, 65-48.

-- Brookstone, Marion County, Mount Vernon Presbyterian, Prince Avenue and Savannah Christian all picked up the first state playoff wins in their programs’ history.

-- Georgia Military College picked up its first state playoff win since 1929, when the No. 9 Bulldogs downed No. 24 Claxton 60-46. GMC is 24-3 and having its best season in the history of the 118-year school.

GIRLS

-- Here is the private bracket and the public bracket for Round 2.

-- Galloway and Fellowship Christian both picked up their first state playoff wins in program history in Round 1. No. 18 Galloway upset No. 15 Lakeview Academy, 67-47, while No. 16 Fellowship Christian defeated No. 17 Savannah Christian, 55-39.

-- No. 9 Athens Academy picked up its first state playoff win since 2003 with a 39-27 win over No. 24 Darlington. No. 13 Landmark Christian picked up its first state playoff win since 2007 with a 53-46 win over No. 20 George Walton Academy.

-- One matchup in Round 2 will feature two of the top five scorers in the classification. Senior Brittany Davis, the state’s top scorer at 31 points per game, will lead No. 4 Greenville against No. 13 Turner County and senior Zakiyah Office, who is averaging 21 points per game, No. 5 in Class A.
