Gymnastics: Carrollton wins meet at Lovett

Carrollton earned a first-place finish at Lovett on Thursday, despite several mistakes. Trojans’ head coach Nicki McGovern described this year’s team as more consistent than previous seasons and that top-to-bottom dependability is how they were able to overcome falls and still win the meet. Carrollton finished first in the meet with 106.9 points and edged runner-up Forsyth Central’s 105.9 total. Milton placed third with 82 points. Five individuals and the Carrollton team have already qualified for state and Thursday’s win came against a solid Forsyth Central team that won the county meet earlier this season over 2013 state champion Lambert. A’Darian Clark scored Carrollton a 9.050 on bars and an 8.6 on the beam, despite a fall and Taylor Griffin stuck a 9.0 on her floor routine.

The Trojans will get the week off for spring break and will be back in the gym the following Monday before heading back to Lovett to take on the host Lions, Walton, First Presbyterian Day and Pike County on April 8. Buford is the only team to top Carrollton this season and the Wolves edged the Trojans 110.4 to 108.3 in the 15-team House of Troy Invitational on March 14. Buford’s gymnastics team is in just its second season in school history and remains undefeated.
