Friday review: Woodstock, Brookwood, Lassiter score big wins

Here’s a recap of what happened Friday in the high class …

Short version - Two county rivalries went to overtime –Woodstock beat Cherokee 50-42 in Cherokee (see Cherokee Tribune story), and Brookwood beat Parkview 24-23 in Gwinnett (See Stan Awtrey's story.)  … Lassiter won another county rivalry game vs. Walton 13-7 in Cobb (See Chip Saye's story.) … No. 1 Roswell needed a fourth-quarter comeback to beat Etowah 17-14.  … Mill Creek clinched the Region 6.

Here’s more -

Region 1 – Lowndes (d. Camden County) and Colquitt County (d. Tift County) won convincingly as expected. Lowndes (8-1, 2-0) and Colquitt (5-4, 2-0) will play next week in Moultrie for the region title. Tift (5-4, 0-2) and Camden (2-6, 0-2) will play for the third state-playoff berth the following week. Tift might still get the Class 7A wild card if it loses. But it will be do-or-die for Camden.

Region 2 – Westlake (5-3, 2-0) beat Newnan (3-5, 1-2) 24-14. That means Westlake can clinch the region title with a win next week vs. Wheeler (4-4, 2-1). East Coweta (6-2, 2-1) blew out Pebblebrook (4-4, 1-2) 37-0 to break a second-place tie and is looking like the second-best team in the region.

Region 3 – McEachern (d. North Paulding 34-6), Hillgrove (d. Kennesaw Mountain 34-22) and North Cobb (d. Marietta 31-16) remain the big three. Hillgrove (5-3, 3-0) plays North Cobb (6-2, 2-1) next week and McEachern (7-1, 3-0) the week after.

Region 4 – Great night of football in this region. Cherokee beat Cherokee County rival Woodstock 50-42 in overtime in a game between teams that entered with 2-0 records in region play. Cherokee (5-3, 3-0) is now tied for the lead with top-ranked Roswell (8-0, 3-0), which came back in the fourth quarter to beat tied-for-last Etowah 17-14. Cherokee and Roswell will play each other Nov. 4. But in the meantime, Cherokee must face revived Lassiter (6-2, 1-2), which beat Walton 13-7 in a rivalry game.

Region 5 – Lambert is one victory from its first-ever region championship after a 17-7 victory over West Forsyth in a game that decided first place. Lambert (5-3, 3-0) just needs to beat Milton (3-5, 1-2) or Forsyth Central (3-4, 0-3) to claim the prize. South Forsyth beat North Forsyth 42-7, and Milton beat Forsyth Central 45-0. That means South (5-3, 2-1) almost certainly will make the playoffs and that North (4-4, 1-2) and Milton (3-5, 1-2) will fight for the fourth chair on Nov. 4.

-Region 6 – Second-ranked Mill Creek (9-0, 5-0) clinched the region title with a 35-23 victory over Mountain View (7-2, 3-2). Meanwhile, Peachtree Ridge (3-5, 2-2) upset North Gwinnett (4-4, 2-2) 28-21. Now there’s a virtual four-way tie for second among those three and Collins Hill (2-6, 2-2). Only three likely will make the playoffs.

-Region 7 – No. 10 Brookwood beat No. 8 Parkview 24-23 in overtime. That means Brookwood (6-2, 4-0) will play at fifth-ranked Norcross (8-0, 4-0) next week for the region title. Parkview and Central Gwinnett will battle it out for third the final week.

-Region 8 – Predictable: Grayson (d. Newton 34-0), Archer (d. Rockdale County 35-0) and South Gwinnett (d. Shiloh 35-6). Grayson (7-1, 4-0) travels to Hoover, Ala., next week and probably can’t clinch the region title until it returns.
