GHSF Daily asked Georgia head coaches to answer these four questions. We'll report from a different head coach each day.
Richard Morgan, Marietta
1. What is the most memorable game you've been a part of as a player or coach?"Our first state championship at Oscar Smith High School in Virginia in 2008. We finished off a 15-0 season by defeating Osborne High School at Virginia Tech 54-24. We set numerous state playoff records in the game. In addition, one of our players had been tragically shot and killed in the summer prior to the season, and we dedicated the season to him. It was a very emotional ending to an amazing season. We had been knocking on the door for several years and had lost in the state semifinals the year before. It was the first state championship in the school's 55-year history, and there were many celebrations within our community." [Morgan, who just completed his first season at Marietta, was 164-20 in 14 seasons at Oscar Smith and won state titles in 2008 and 2011 while making the program the most nationally respected in Virginia.]
2. Which high school coach would you want your son to play for, and why?"I'm actually looking forward to the day that my sons can play for me and my staff. They are in fourth and fifth grade now, but I look forward to being able to spend more time with them and to help them develop. I know the love, dedication and commitment that they and their teammates will get from our staff."
3. What is your pet peeve as a coach or favorite saying/motto?"Greatness is uncommon; therefore, it will not be achieved by the common man."
4. Which GHSA policy or high school football rule would you most like to see changed?"I'd like to have the sideline-to-helmet communication with the quarterback."
