DeShields to transfer from North Carolina after one season

Former Norcross basketball star Diamond DeShields is transferring from North Carolina after a freshman season in which she averaged 18 points and 5.4 rebounds for a team that was 27-10, the Raleigh News & Observer reported late Thursday.

DeShields was The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s all-classification girls player of the year in 2013 and led Norcross to three state championships. She was one of the most recruited players in the country and in Georgia history.

“I do not know or understand why Diamond DeShields has decided to leave the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,” North Carolina head coach Sylvia Hatchell said in a statement. ''It breaks my heart that I will not have the opportunity to coach Diamond and help develop her on and off the court. I love her and wish her well.”

Hatchell missed last season while receiving treatment for leukemia but is expected to return for the 2014-15 season.
