The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, in conjunction with Georgia High School Football Daily, will announce its annual Super 11 team in two weeks. The Super 11 team has been an AJC feature since 1985.
Below are the 44 finalists for this year's honor. Their status as college recruits, reported below using the 247Sports Composite rankings, is taken into account but it is not an overriding factor. Their selections are based primarily on their subjective value and talents as high school players. Only seniors are eligible.
*RB/DB Micah Abernathy (Greater Atlanta Christian): Abernathy was the leading rusher with 1,664 yards and 20 touchdowns on 154 carries (10.8 yards per carry) for a team that finished 10-2 and reached the second round of the Class AA playoffs. He also caught seven passes for 60 yards and returned four kickoffs for 279 yards and two TDs. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior won the 400 meters in the Class AA track meet as a sophomore and junior. Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee reportedly have shown the most interest among the 20 or so BCS schools that have made offers. *LB Montavious Atkinson (Hughes): The 6-foot-2, 205-pound senior was named a first-team all-region linebacker in 3-AAAAAA last season after finishing with 137 tackles (74 solo), five tackles for losses, four forced fumbles and two interceptions for a team that recorded five shutouts. *LB Brian Bell (Lowndes): Bell, a 6-foot-3, 225-pound senior, was named first-team all-region in 1-AAAAAA last season after recording 55 tackles (37 solo), 10.5 tackles for losses and 3.5 sacks. Lowndes went 9-4 in 2013 and reached the third round of the state playoffs, losing to eventual champion Norcross 28-7. *RB Joshua Bettistea (Allatoona): The 5-foot-11, 185-pound senior was named first-team all-state in Class AAAAA last season after rushing for 1,938 yards and 27 touchdowns, with averages of 8.2 yards per carry and 176 yards per game, for a team that was 7-4 and reached the first round of the playoffs. Bettistea was a workhorse for the Buccaneers, averaging 21 carries per game, with at least 28 in each of his final three games. He ran for 1,190 yards and nine TDs as a sophomore. *PK/P Rodrigo Blankenship (Sprayberry): The 6-foot-1, 182-pound senior was named the first-team all-state punter in Class AAAAA last season after averaging 42.5 yards on 38 kicks. His longest punt was 71 yards, and he put 14 inside the 20-yard line. Blankenship also made nine of 15 field goals (with a long of 52 yards), made all 28 of his extra-point attempts, and had touchbacks on 87 percent of his kickoffs. Sprayberry finished 2-8 and failed to make the playoffs. Blankenship has an offer from Alabama-Birmingham as well as interest from Cornell, Massachusetts and five SEC schools, according to 247Sports. *LB/DL Mekhi Brown (Carver-Columbus): Brown was named a first-team all-state linebacker in Class AAA last season by the Georgia Sports Writers Association and was an honorable mention selection in 2012, but the recruiting services project him as a defensive end in college. In 2013, he had 56 tackles, 14 tackles for losses, 11 sacks, 12 pass break-ups and four forced fumbles for a Carver team that went 11-2 and reached the state quarterfinals. *DL Austin Bryant (Thomas County Central): Bryant, a 6-foot-4, 245-pound senior, was named second-team all-region in 1-AAAAA last season after finishing with 58 tackles, 11.5 tackles for losses, 4.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. *RB Kawon Bryant (North Oconee): Bryant was named the Class AAA offensive player of the year last season after rushing for 2,559 yards on 272 carries (9.4 yards per carry). The 5-foot-9, 195-pound senior ran for a state-leading 41 touchdowns during the regular season and caught 15 passes for 208 yards. He also was named the offensive player of the year in Region 8-AAA and was the Athens Banner-Herald area player of the year. North Oconee finished 7-4 and lost in the first round of the playoffs. *DL Andrew Butcher (Alpharetta): Butcher is a 6-foot-3, 240-pound senior who was named first-team all-state in Class AAAAAA last season after recording 87 tackles, 16 tackles for losses, 11 sacks and two forced fumbles for a team that went 9-3, won its second region championship and reached the second round of the playoffs. *Montrell Custis (Lovejoy): The 6-foot, 175-pound senior was named second-team all-state in Class AAAAAA last season by the Georgia Sports Writers Association after finishing with 71 tackles, 25 pass break-ups, four interceptions, four blocked kicks and two defensive touchdowns. Lovejoy went 10-2 and reached the second round of the playoffs. His cousin, former Lovejoy star Travis Custis, was the Class AAAAAA offensive player of the year in 2012. *OL Chuma Edoga (McEachern): Edoga was the top offensive lineman on a McEachern team that had a 1,200-yard passer (QB Ty Clemons) and two 1,100-yard rushers (Clemons and RB Taj Griffin). The 6-foot-4, 285-pound senior is a five-star recruit. He graded at 90 percent with 35 pancake blocks last season and was named first-team all-state in Class AAAAAA. *DB/LB Arrington Farrar (Woodward Academy): The 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior was named a first-team all-state defensive back in Class AAA last season after finishing with 97 tackles, four pass break-ups, three interceptions, three tackles for losses, two forced fumbles and a blocked kick. Woodward Academy went 9-3 and reached the second round of the state playoffs. Farrar is a four-star recruit who is rated as the nation's No. 27 outside linebacker by Scout, the No. 19 athlete by 247Sports, and the No. 14 safety by Rivals. *RB/LB Ruben Garnett (Aquinas): Garnett was named the Class A offensive player of the year last season after leading Aquinas to its first state championship, defeating Calvary Day 27-7 in the private-school final. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound senior rushed for 1,928 yards and 22 touchdowns on 263 carries (7.3 yards per carry) and caught 19 passes for 279 yards and five TDs. Garnett also had 58 tackles and an interception on defense from his strong safety position. *Terry Godwin (Callaway): The 6-foot, 165-pound senior was a first-team all-state receiver in Class AAA last season after catching 24 passes for 585 yards and nine touchdowns. He also had 38 tackles, five interceptions and three pass break-ups for a team that finished 12-2 and reached the state semifinals, losing to champion Buford 24-14 in what was the Wolves' closest game of the season. *QB/DB A.J. Gray (Washington County): Gray, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound senior, made first-team all-state last season as a defensive back, the position he is expected to play in college. But he also put up big numbers on offense, completing 69 percent of his passes for 1,913 yards and 16 touchdowns and rushing for 1,324 yards and 18 TDs. Gray also made 75 tackles and had five interceptions, returning one for a touchdown. Washington County averaged 47.7 points per game last season and finished 13-1, losing to Buford 35-19 in the Class AAA championship game. *RB Taj Griffin (McEachern): The 5-foot-10, 175-pound senior rushed for 1,225 yards and nine touchdowns on 170 carries for a team that finished 11-3 and third in its region but reached the Class AAAAAA semifinals. He had one of the most memorable plays of the 2013 season, returning a punt 85 yards for the game-winning touchdown with a minute remaining in a 35-32 victory in the quarterfinals against Collins Hill. Griffin missed significant time last season while injured. He committed to Oregon in April. *LB/DL Quintin Hampton (Colquitt County): The 6-foot, 220-pound senior was a first-team all-state linebacker in Class AAAAAA last season, although some recruiting services project his college position to be defensive end, which he also played for the Packers. Hampton finished the 2013 season with 123 tackles, 30 tackles for losses and 19.5 sacks for a team that went 11-3 and reached the state semifinals for the fifth consecutive season. *OL Mitch Hyatt (North Gwinnett): The 6-foot-6, 275-pound senior is a five-star recruit who is considered one of the nation's top offensive line prospects, ranked as the No. 1 tackle by Scout and the No. 2 tackle by Rivals and 247Sports. Hyatt was a first-team all-state selection in Class AAAAAA last season and was voted offensive lineman of the year by Gwinnett County coaches. He paved the way for an offense that averaged 229 yards passing and 142 yards rushing. North Gwinnett went 13-2 and lost to Norcross in the state final. *OL Kaleb Kim (Mill Creek): Kim, a 6-foot-4, 280-pound senior, is a four-star recruit who is rated among the nation's top 30 offensive tackles, including a high of No. 14 by Rivals. He had an overall blocking grade of 88 percent for the season with 37 pancake blocks and led the way for an offense that averaged more than 420 yards and 40 points per game. Kim was named first-team all-state in Class AAAAAA last season. The Hawks finished 6-4 and were likely the best team in the state that failed to reach the playoffs. *RB Sihiem King (Colquitt County): The 5-foot-8, 175-pound senior was named second-team all-state as an athlete by the Georgia Sports Writers Association and honorable mention as a running back by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He was the leading rusher in Region 1-AAAAAA with 1,392 yards and 17 touchdowns, and he caught 34 passes for 369 yards and a TD. Colquitt County was the runner-up in the region and reached the semifinals for the fifth consecutive season, losing to eventual champion Norcross to finish 11-3. *RB Mikell Lands-Davis (Alexander): Lands-Davis was named first-team all-state in Class AAAA last season after leading the Cougars (8-5) to their most victories in 16 years and their first appearance in the state quarterfinals. The 6-foot, 210-pound senior rushed for 2,374 yards (7.68 yards per carry) and 28 touchdowns last season and had three games with more than 300 yards. *LB Zach Morris (Ringgold): The 6-foot-4, 265-pound senior had 114 tackles, 15.5 sacks, 13 tackles for losses and seven forced fumbles for a Ringgold team that won a school-record 11 games and reached the Class AAA semifinals. Morris and teammate Slade Dale became the first Ringgold players to be named first-team all-state by the AJC since Houston Black in 1955, according to the Georgia High School Football Historians Association. *DL Natrez Patrick (Mays): Patrick, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound senior, was named first-team all-state in Class AAAAA last season after recording 83 tackles, 27 tackles for losses, 17 sacks, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and three defensive touchdowns. *QB Tyler Queen (North Cobb): The 6-foot-3, 235-pound senior passed for 2,172 yards and 22 touchdowns and rushed for 434 yards and nine TDs last year for a team that went 9-3 and reached the second round of the Class AAAAAA playoffs. He had even better numbers as a sophomore, passing for 2,607 yards and rushing for 925 in leading the Warriors to the state semifinals. Queen is has committed to Auburn. *WR T.J. Rahming (McEachern): The 5-foot-9, 165-pound senior had 54 receptions for 1,054 yards and 13 touchdowns on a team that also had two 1,000-yard rushers (QB Ty Clemons and RB Taj Griffin). Rahming also scored three touchdowns and averaged 20 yards on 20 punt returns. McEachern finished 11-3 in 2013 and advanced to the Class AAAAAA semifinals. *DL Chauncey Rivers (Stephenson): The 6-foot-3, 240-pound senior was named first-team all-state in Class AAAAA last season after recording 108 tackles, 29 tackles for losses and 15 sacks. Stephenson went 9-3 in 2013, reached the second round of the state playoffs and held eight of 12 opponents to seven points or less. *DB Rashad Roundtree (Lakeside-Evans): The 6-foot-1, 195-pound safety was a first-team all-state selection in Class AAAAA last season and was named the Region 2-AAAAA defensive player of the year. He finished the season with 97 tackles and four interceptions for a Lakeside team that went 6-5 and reached the first round of the state playoffs. Rivals considers him a five-star recruit and the nation's No. 2 prospect at safety. *LB Quarte Sapp (Milton): The 6-foot-2, 203-pound senior is ranked as high as No. 10 nationally at his position by Rivals. He was named second-team all-state in Class AAAAAA last season by the Georgia Sports Writers Association and honorable mention by the AJC. In 2013, Sapp had 104 tackles (76 solo), 20 tackles for losses, two interceptions, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and a touchdown on a fumble return. *PK/P Ian Shannon (Marietta): Shannon, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound senior, was named the first-team all-state placekicker in Class AAAAAA last season, but he is also the nation's No. 1 punter prospect in the Prokicker.com rankings. He made 16 of 18 field goals (the misses came from 47 and 58 yards) and 42 of 45 extra points, and 62 of his 73 kickoffs went for touchbacks. His longest field goal was a 49-yarder as time expired in a 24-21 victory against North Cobb, handing the Warriors their only region loss. He punted 37 times for a 40.7-yard average and allowed only 20 return yards all season. Marietta finished 8-3 and reached the first round of the playoffs. *DB/KR Yaquis "Duke" Shelley (Tucker): The 5-foot-10, 170-pound senior was named first-team all-state in Class AAAAA last season after finishing with 44 tackles and six interceptions. He scored touchdowns on three interception returns, four kickoff returns and one punt return, and he scored three TDs on offense. Rivals considers him a four-star recruit and ranks him No. 21 nationally at cornerback.. *WR/DB Darius Slayton (Greater Atlanta Christian): The 6-foot-2, 180-pound senior was named a first-team all-state receiver in Class AA after catching 31 passes for 940 yards and eight touchdowns as GAC went 10-2 and reached the second round of the playoffs. Projected as a defensive player by some recruiting services, Slayton has more than 20 offers, including those from Georgia, Georgia Tech, Auburn, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. *LB/RB Roquan Smith (Macon County): The 6-foot-2, 205-pound senior is a four-star recruit who is rated by Rivals as the nation's No. 5 outside linebacker. He was named first-team all-state in Class AA last season after finishing with 101 tackles, 36 tackles for losses, 12 sacks, four interceptions, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and two defensive touchdowns. He also had 106 yards rushing, 609 yards receiving and nine touchdowns on offense. Macon County went 6-5 in 2013 and reached the first round of the playoffs. *WR Jayson Stanley (Creekside): The 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior was the leading receiver for a team that had a 2,500-yard passer (QB Felix Harper) and two backs with more than 1,300 yards rushing (Dexter Knox and Bricen Terry). He finished with 41 receptions for 817 yards and 16 touchdowns in helping the Seminoles to a 15-0 record and the first state championship in school history. Stanley had the longest scoring play from scrimmage, a 77-yard reception from Harper, in a wild 52-28 victory over Tucker in the Class AAAAA final. *WR/DB Brad Stewart (Benedictine): Stewart, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound senior, was named honorable mention all-state after catching 30 passes for 698 yards and 11 touchdowns for a run-first team that finished 13-1 and set a school record for victories and reached the Class AA semifinals, losing to state runner-up Lamar County 10-7. Stewart also had 32 tackles and two interceptions as a defensive back. *LB/RB Elijah Sullivan (Tucker): Sullivan was one of the most versatile players for a Tucker team that finished 14-1 and reached the Class AAAAA championship game. He had 45 tackles, eight sacks, nine tackles for losses and one fumble recovery from his linebacker position. Offensively, he was the team's second-leading rusher with 694 yards and 11 touchdowns and caught five passes for 132 yards. *RB Eric Swinney (Sandy Creek): The 5-foot-10, 190-pound senior rushed for 1,289 yards and 24 touchdowns for a team that also had another 1,000-yard rusher (Delvin Weems, now at Tucker) and averaged 183 yards per game passing. Swinney also had 13 receptions for 343 yards and four TDs for the Patriots, who finished 11-1-1 and reached the state quarterfinals. *LB/RB Joshua Thomas (Buford): The 6-foot, 202-pound senior was named a first-team all-state linebacker in Class AAA last season. At running back, he rushed for 16 touchdowns and a team-high 1,046 yards last season. On defense, Thomas finished with 56 tackles, four tackles for losses, two sacks, four fumble recoveries and two defensive touchdowns for a Buford team that went 15-0 and won its ninth state championship in 13 years. *PK/P Justin Thompson (Aquinas): Thompson is a 5-foot-10, 150-pound senior who was named the first-team all-state placekicker in Class A last season. He made 12 of 13 field goals, including two 48-yarders, was 60-for-63 on extra-point attempts and put 57 of his 88 kickoffs into the end zone (65 percent). He also punted 28 times for an average of 41.4 yards per kick. Aquinas went 14-0 and won its first state championship, beating Calvary Day 27-7 in the private-school final. *DL Trenton Thompson (Westover): The 6-foot-4, 290-pound senior is the consensus No. 2 prospect in the country. He was named first-team all-state in Class AAAA last season after finishing with 83 tackles, 38 tackles for losses and 12 sacks. Westover won a school-record nine games in 2013, allowed just 12.9 points per game and reached the second round of the state playoffs. *DL D'Andre Walker (Hughes): Walker became the first first-team all-state player in school history when he was named to the Class AAAAAA team last season. He was his region's defensive player of the year. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound senior had 108 tackles (29 for losses), 21 sacks, seven forced fumbles and a fumble recovery for a touchdown for a team that finished 10-2 and recorded five shutouts. *OL Dallas Warmack (Mays): The 6-foot-3, 290-pound senior graded at 83 percent with 31 pancake blocks and was named first-team all-state in Class AAAAA. Mays finished 8-4 (second place in powerful Region 6-AAAAA) and advanced to the second round of the state playoffs. *WR Preston Williams (Lovejoy): Williams, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound senior, was named Class AAAAAA offensive player of the year after catching 56 passes for 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns for a team that finished 10-2. He had one of the top individual performances of the 2013 season in a 27-23 victory over Marietta in the first round of the playoffs, catching seven passes for 275 yards and four touchdowns, including the game-winning 47-yard TD reception on the final play of the game. Scout and 247Sports rate Williams as a five-star recruit and the nation's No. 1 receiver. *OL Nick Wilson (Milton): The 6-foot-3, 280-pound senior was named first-team all-state in Class AAAAAA last season after grading at 88 percent with 81 knockdowns and 37 pancake blocks and allowing no sacks on 126 passing plays. Milton finished 8-3 and lost to state runner-up North Gwinnett in the first round of the playoffs. *QB Aaron Winchester (Mount Pisgah Christian): Winchester began to gain attention last season when he led the Patriots to a school-record 12 victories - the previous best was seven - and the first region title in the program's 11-year history.
