Mount Paran Christian has fielded football teams for only 10 years, but the Kennesaw private school has a state championship and one of the best players in Class A history. Or maybe two.
The first was Dorian Walker, who rushed for 2,262 yards, leading Mount Paran to a historic state title in 2014. Mount Paran was the first Cobb County team to win a championship since 1967.
Walker's understudy that year was a junior named Taylor Trammell. The next season, in just 12 games, Trammell rushed for 2,479 yards and scored 38 touchdowns. For his career, Trammell rushed for 4,126 yards, scored 61 touchdowns and was a four-year starter whose skills as a safety and return man were as valuable as his offensive contributions.
Trammell, now 19, was drafted in the first round of the 2016 MLB June Amateur Draft. He's playing in a Class A League in Dayton, Ohio, this summer.
The only players from this region of schools to make the NFL are Whitefield Academy's Kennard Backman and Darlington's Dave Lloyd, although Darlington's choice here is Ryan McMahon, who set a Florida State record for consecutive starts and was a three-time candidate for the Rimington Award.
Also notable is Trion's Stacy Searels, an All-American at Auburn, now offensive line coach at Miami.
Georgia State now claims two projected starters from this region - King's Ridge Christian WR Penny Hart and Mount Pisgah QB Aaron Winchester.
The toughest call came out of Bowdon. LB Chris Ellis got the nod among 30 first-team all-state players in its history. And the oldest player to make our lists in this series so far is Gordon Lee's Leon Myers, a first-team all-state performer in 1955 who played on Auburn teams that went 24-5-1 in his time.
