Basketball rankings: Miller Grove retakes No. 1 over Allatoona; Columbia still on top despite losses

The others, still unbeaten entering the final week of the regular season, are Greater Atlanta Christian and Vidalia, the top two teams in Class AA.

Five girls teams remain unbeaten. Three are ranked No. 1 in their classes - Redan (AAAA), Washington County (AAA) and Holy Innocents’ (A). The others are Kendrick and Pelham, the No. 2 and No. 4 teams in AA.

The new No. 1 boys team in AAAAA is Miller Grove, despite five losses. Miller Grove has won state titles each of the past five seasons. Miller Grove has lost to three out-of-state teams. The Wolverines also have lost to fifth-ranked and defending champion Norcross of AAAAAA and No. 1 Columbia of AAAA.

Columbia, which has won state titles four of the past six years, went 1-2 last weekend in Orlando. Its losses were to Greensboro Day, the No. 2 team overall in North Carolina, and American Heritage, the No. 12 team in Florida, according to MaxPreps rankings. MaxPreps rated Columbia’s schedule as the second-toughest in AAAA behind Fayette County’s before the Florida tournament, where Columbia also had a victory over Shiloh, a AAAAAA team.

There are only four new teams in the rankings this week. They are Worth County for Sandy Creek (AAAA boys), Portal for Wilkinson County (A boys), South Effingham for Chestatee (AAAA girls), and Johnson-Savannah for Chapel Hill (AAA girls).

But there were several significant games.

Tri-Cities’ boys upset Westlake, which fell to No. 4 from No. 2 in Class AAAAAA. Buford’s boys upset No. 2 Morgan County, avenging an early-season loss, and moved up a spot to No. 5 in AAA. Morgan County fell to No. 6.

Parkview’s girls defeated Archer 55-52 on Friday. They swapped places in the rankings, Parkview moving to No. 2 in AAAAA, Archer dropping to No. 3. Douglas County held on to the No. 8 spot in AAAAAA with a 56-49 victory in overtime Saturday against Hughes, which fell from No. 9 to No. 10. Brunswick, which has wrapped up the regular-season title in Region 1, moved up a spot to No. 9.
