OL Whitley brings high ambitions to Tech

Jake Whitley is one of six offensive linemen in the Georgia Tech incoming freshman class. It is his intent to make his mark.

Asked his career goals as a Yellow Jacket, Whitley replied, “Become All-ACC and All-American.”

Whitley, 6-foot-4 and 295 pounds, most played tackle in high school, but expects to move inside to center or guard.

“I think it’ll be good,” he said. “I think it’ll probably be better for my situation the way my body is set up and everything.”

On his recruiting video, Whitley shows good footwork, a skill he said he has developed with the help of speed and agility drills. That trait should serve him well in his goal for this year to make the travel team and earn playing time.

Whitley, from North Augusta, S.C., is one of two South Carolinians on the roster, joining fellow incoming freshman and offensive lineman Michael Preddy (Charleston). The state has not been particularly fruitful for Tech. David Sims was the only player on last year’s roster from the Palmetto State, while there were three from North Carolina. Past Jackets from South Carolina include two greats, Joe Hamilton and Vance Walker.
