Georgia Tech great Calvin Johnson will be inducted into the school's sports hall of fame Friday evening along with seven other Yellow Jackets legends, including basketball star Jarrett Jack.

Johnson's career at Tech, 2004-06, was full of highlights, memories and a near-spotless legacy. For a story for myajc and Friday's print edition, former teammates, opponents and others shared stories about Johnson. The group includes former N.C. State safety Troy Graham, who had the misfortune of defending Johnson when he made perhaps the greatest catch of his career, going across the middle and then reaching across his body to make a one-handed catch on a pass from quarterback Reggie Ball. It has become a staple of any highlight video of Johnson's.

“There’s only one or two people that could make a play like that,” Graham said. “It had to be him.”

Graham recalled the greater context of the play, that it kept alive a fourth-quarter drive that resulted in a go-ahead touchdown in a Tech victory that damaged the Wolfpack’s bowl chances.

“That’s a great play by Megatron,” said Graham, now a high-school football coach in Huntsville, Ala. “I think every time they show that clip, somebody should be cutting me a check.”
