Joseph becomes Tech's all-time winningest coach

Georgia Tech women’s basketball coach MaChelle Joseph became the all-time winningest coach in team history Sunday with the Yellow Jackets’ 74-66 win over Clemson at McCamish Pavilion.

Joseph won her 224th game against 139 losses, passing predecessor Agnus Berenato’s win total. Joseph needed 363 games and 12 1/2  seasons to pass Berenato, who coached Tech for 15 seasons and 432 games.

The Jackets did it in fashion typical to many of Joseph’s wins at Tech, by controlling the boards (49-36 edge) and strong defense (Clemson shot 35.7 percent from the field, 5.5 points below their season average). Tech was led by forward Roddreka Rogers, who totaled a career-high 18 rebounds to go with 16 points on 8-for-11 shooting.

“She’s a great coach,” Rogers said following the game. “She sees potential in you when you don’t even see it in yourself. She will push you beyond your limits. She’s great. She knows what she is doing and she deserves this so much.”

Joseph is 10th all-time among ACC coaches in victories. Her .604 winning percentage is also 10th all-time and fourth among active ACC coaches. Her work is particularly impressive considering Tech’s all-time winning percentage before her hire prior to the 2003-04 season was .463. Tech had been to two NCAA tournaments prior to her hire and seven since.
