Georgia Tech getting 'steal' in Norcross corner Da'Meon Williams

Norcross High cornerback Da’Meon Williams may not have committed to Georgia Tech because two former teammates are now at Tech. But Tech’s interest in Williams, who committed to Tech on Saturday, was aided by one of those players, signee Jarett Cole.

“I think they started liking (Williams) after they watched film on Cole,” Norcross coach Keith Maloof said.

That is to say, in watching game video to scout Cole, a safety, defensive coordinator Ted Roof noticed someone else in the secondary who was making plays – Williams.

“Coach Roof picked up on Da’Meon and a few others,” Maloof said.

Credit Roof with another player recruited out of Gwinnett County.

Williams said he selected Tech “because out of every visit or talk that I had with a coach, there were more pros than cons with Georgia Tech. I felt more comfortable with Georgia Tech than any university. I liked Michigan State, Missouri, Wake Forest and North Carolina, but I felt Georgia Tech was the best fit for me.”

Williams was able to make multiple visits down to campus to visit coaches or watch practice. Roof likewise made the drive up I-85 to Norcross, Williams said.

Williams said that he received 15 scholarship offers.

“He’s a great cover guy, he can tackle, he can break on the ball,” Maloof said. “He’s got great ball skills. He can do about anything that we need him to do.”

Williams said he spoke with Cole, who was to check in at Tech Tuesday in advance of summer classes, but that he didn’t influence his decision. Tech’s other Norcross alumnus is A-back Clinton Lynch. (Former Tech star Jeremy Muyres is an assistant coach at Norcross.)

Williams, 5-foot-11 and 172 pounds, is Tech’s fifth commitment for the 2017 class. He said he is “100 percent” committed. Williams is a three-star prospect, according to 247 Sports, ranked the No. 97 cornerback in the country.

“I think Georgia Tech got a steal,” Maloof said. “I think they’ve got a great player. He’s done a lot of great things for us the last two years, going into his third year, and we’re real proud of him. … I think they’re getting the total package.”
