Chizik once quashed possible Auburn-Tech series

Georgia Tech might well have resumed its series with Auburn if not for former Tigers coach Gene Chizik.

Tuesday on the SEC Network, where Chizik is an analyst, he said that he vetoed an idea to schedule the Yellow Jackets. The topic came up as the SEC released the 2015 schedules for member teams.

“Fortunately I could do something about this because at one point they threw across my desk, 'let's play Georgia Tech,’” Chizik said, according to . “I said, ‘No, no, no. We don't want to play Georgia Tech. Completely different offense.’ You talk to any coach out there they do not want to play the Georgia Techs of the world.”

Chizik was making reference to coach Paul Johnson’s spread-option offense, which is notoriously difficult to prepare for because of its unorthodox nature.

Tech and Auburn were longtime rivals when both were members of the SEC and the schools continued to play annually through 1987. The teams played again in 2003 and 2005. Tech has played Auburn 92 times, the most of any opponent after Georgia.
