Bria Matthews shines at Tech's dismal ACC track meet

On the whole, Georgia Tech’s track teams could not have finished worse at the ACC outdoor track and field championships this past weekend. The Yellow Jackets, though, did receive another surpassing performance from freshman Bria Matthews.

Matthews won the triple jump with a school-record effort and took fourth in the long jump with another school-record. It followed her double championship in the long jump and triple jump at the ACC indoor championship in February.

Her triple jump (45 feet, .5 inches, or 13.73 meters) qualified her for the U.S. Olympic Trials and stamps her as a potential candidate to make the team. Her previous best was 43' 8 3/4" (13.33 meters), an improvement of almost 16 inches. Both the long jump and triple jump were wind-aided, but within allowable limits.

The third-place finisher at the 2012 trials earned her spot with a best jump of 45’3”, which was wind-aided.

Prior to this past weekend, the third best U.S. performance this year was 45’9”. Matthews’ performance this weekend would tie her for fifth best nationally this year.

The Tech men finished 14th out of 14 teams. The women’s team was 15th out of 15 teams.
