The ACC championship game between Georgia Tech and Florida State last December had the fifth highest viewership in college football for the entire pre-bowl season, with 10.1 million. viewers Perhaps the most important for Tech watched the game on a television set in the Palo Alto, Calif., area.
That would be Patrick Skov, expected to arrive in June as a graduate transfer from Stanford and be plugged in at B-back.
“I think he saw us play in the ACC championship game, and it piqued his interest in the position and what he would be doing,” coach Paul Johnson said Tuesday of Skov at the ACC spring meetings. “Of course, the school was a good fit for him and I think he and his dad decided it might be a good fit and they talked it through and contacted us to see if we’d have an interest.”
In that game, B-backs Synjyn Days and Zach Laskey carried the ball a combined 30 times for 107 yards and four touchdowns. As a junior fullback last season, Skov carried the ball 12 times for 18 yards and four touchdowns. All Stanford fullbacks had a combined 16 carries.
“We’re excited to have an experienced guy coming in,” Johnson said. “We haven’t had a day of practice, haven’t seen him play, but certainly there’s a need for an experienced guy.”
Johnson said that Marcus Allen, who was elevated to the top of the depth chart at B-back after injuries to C.J. Leggett and Quaide Weimerskirch, will start out as the No. 1 B-back.
But Skov "will have every opportunity, just like everybody else," Johnson said.
