The Associated Press reports that there has been another multi-fatality crash involving a tractor-trailer on I-16 this afternoon, the third such wreck in two months.
The crash happened at about 3:35 a.m. Friday in Treutlen County, about 70 miles east of Macon. The Georgia State Patrol says a tanker truck traveling westbound struck a Toyota Scion in the rear. The impact sent both vehicles across the median and into the eastbound lanes of I-16.
State Patrol spokeswoman Tracey Watson says all three people traveling in the Scion died in the crash. Their names were not immediately released.
The driver of the tanker truck, 56-year-old Christopher Hinson of Lyons, was taken to a nearby hospital. The extent of his injuries was unknown.
The crash remains under investigation. No decision has been made on whether to file charges.
Georgia is among the top five states for fatality crashes involving commercial trucks, according to the Governor's Office of Highway Safety. Last year, more than 16,000 occurred statewide, 157 of them fatal.
