In a region awash in cars and other ways to get around, some metro Atlanta area residents often lack the transportation to get where they need to go.

That's one takeaway from the Atlanta Regional Commission's new survey of residents in 13 metro counties. They survey found transportation remains a top concern for metro Atlanta residents. But for some it's a bigger challenge than others.

According to the survey results, about 30 percent of respondents agreed or strongly agreed with the statement “I frequently lack transportation to get to places I need to go.”

Most likely to say they had problems accessing transportation were residents of Atlanta and Clayton and DeKalb counties. Least likely to agree were residents of Fayette, Coweta and Cobb counties. Here’s a county-by-county look at the responses to the question:

Though a presentation of the results provided to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution does not break out the results by demographic groups, it indicates that baby boomers and seniors, those with lower education levels and black and Latino respondents were most likely to say they had trouble finding transportation.

The results may indicate the respondents don’t ready access to a car. It’s also a signal that existing mass transit options may not be meeting their needs.
