A filming project set to roll in metro Atlanta needs white guys to portray KKK members.
The film is called "Best of Enemies," with "Empire" star Taraji P. Henson , who portrayed brilliant NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson in Atlanta-filmed and Oscar-nominated "Hidden Figures."
"Enemies" explores "North Carolina’s decision to integrate black and white schools," according to detailed casting info just sent to us.
It goes on: "History often has a darker side, especially when dealing with history in the south, and this film will respectfully bring that darkness into the light as we deal with the issue of racism. C.P. Ellis was born and raised on the poor west side of Durham, North Carolina, and as a young man, he joined the Ku Klux Klan seeking a sense of brotherhood and belonging. That being said, we are looking for background actors who are comfortable portraying C.P.’s fellow Klansmen in 1971."
The casting notice stresses emphatically that they are looking for actors and they are not interested in hearing from actual Klan members or sympathizers: "We are NOT seeking actual members of the Ku Klux Klan and as with any set, we hold a zero tolerance policy against racism, sexism, etc.! We are seeking actors, not pro-white activists."
This is not in any way related to the documentary series A&E planned, then abandoned, about Klan members. "Generation KKK," an eight-part series, was billed as an immersive look inside the group known for burning crosses and terrorizing people while wearing pillow cases on their heads .
“The series follows four families: an ‘Imperial Wizard who hopes to groom his teenage daughter to take his place; an Iraq war veteran and proud member of the KKK determined to raise his four-year-old son to embrace his views; a young man who sees his close friend and Klan leader as the father he never had, asked to pledge his loyalty to the KKK; and a fifth-generation Klan family struggling to keep up the legacy,” A&E said in a statement at the time. One of the subjects was a north Georgia family.
The series never aired, though. After a spirited outcry, A&E first announced a number of changes and then ended up scotching the project altogether.
The casting call seeking background actors to portray KKK members indicates the project will film on June 23 in Fairburn. They need white guys ages 21 to 80+ who have a slender build: 38" or smaller.
