Atlanta and "Atlanta" had a big night at the Golden Globes. Numerous TV shows and movies filmed here picked up nominations, but it was the FX show "Atlanta" and its creator/star Donald Glover going home with hardware.
He gave a shout-out to the ATL upon accepting the award for Best Television Series Comedy or Musical. He later picked up his own trophy for Best Actor In A Comedy Series.
“I really want to thank Atlanta and all the black folks in Atlanta, just for being alive, just for being amazing people,” he said. “I couldn’t be here without Atlanta.”

"I just wanted to make something I wasn't seeing," Glover, a former star of NBC's "Community" who grew up in Stone Mountain, told AJC radio and TV writer Rodney Ho as the show debuted. "And something really mythical I felt that wasn't anywhere on television. And I felt Atlanta was a perfect place to do it."
Glover, who used writers mostly from Atlanta and penned much of it himself with his brother Stephen, said he wanted to make his show "a place for thinking. Critical thinking is kind of not cool right now. I kind of based it on different forms of thought."

He readily admits the show is “a little bit weird. It’s more about perspective than anything and how people feel. I really believe more in tone and feeling.”
Glover wasn’t keen on giving away much of the plot lines as the premiere season got underway, preferring to leave an air of mystery. “It takes away from the art,” he said. “Right now it’s hard to tell art from advertising. I try my hardest not give people a lens on things. It’s better to hand them a lens and have them figure it out. ‘Oh sushi! It’s like… fish!’ People can make their own decisions.”
He hadn’t lived here in a while so before he began writing, he spent two weeks here with family and friends to absorb current-day Atlanta. In his view, “as much as things change, they stay the same. It wasn’t hard to do research.”
The season finale, was quite compelling: "Glover leaves it all ambiguous. It's neither a happy season ending nor a sad one. Nor is it a cliffhanger of any sort. It's quiet and contemplative. It does allow him to start season 2 anywhere he wants."
