Try Max Lager’s Indominus at the Old 320 Beer Fest

Max Lager's Indominus

Max Lager's Indominus

On Saturday afternoon, Max Lager's in downtown Atlanta, also known as the oldest brewpub in Georgia, hosts its third annual Old 320 Beer Fest.

With more than 30 breweries from around Georgia and beyond, a chef’s tasting room, and live music, it’s a convivial showcase for some of the best beers around.

Among the beers on tap, I’m looking forward to Max Lager’s Indominus. It’s a big, Belgian-style quad, and the rum barrel-aged version recently won a bronze medal at the U.S. Open Beer Championship.

But it's also a preview for the kinds of beers that Max Lager's brewmaster, John Roberts, will be showcasing at Bold Monk, the new Belgian style brewery on Atlanta's Westside.

And with that, Max Lager’s/Bold Monk Indominus is this week’s Beer Pick.

Noon-4 p.m. Saturday. $60 in advance, or $75 at the door, includes unlimited beer sampling, a commemorative sampler glass, appetizers provided by Max Lager's, an edible pretzel lanyard and one raffle ticket to win a beer journey to West Germany and Belgium with Brewtopia Beer Trips. freshtix.com/events/max-lagers-old-320-beer-fest-2018.

Profile

Indominus is a Belgian Quad from Max Lager’s award-winning brewmaster, John Roberts. In fact, the rum barrel-aged version recently won a medal at the U.S. Open Beer Championship.

Brewed with a maxed-out amount of Belgian candy sugar, this big, dark ale features roasted malts with notes of chocolate and coffee and fruity esters from the Belgian yeast But it’s surprising dry on the palate. At just over 10 percent alcohol, it’s a beer to sip slowly and enjoy.

Pair with

With a sweet-dry character, high alcohol content, and complexity, Belgian quads are naturals for after dinner sipping. But they also make a good match for desserts, grilled red meat, and especially duck.
